Q. What should I where for my engagement session?
A. KISS! Kiss your sweetheart's face, and KISS your outfit....Keep It Simple, Silly!**
Before you arrive for your session with fancy, expensive new clothing that still has tags on it… Try to be sure of a few things first:
- you know that you love your ensemble and feel great in it,
- you know exactly how it fits and
- (most importantly), can move around comfortablly in it.
Never be afraid to take chances with your clothing choices or to try out new looks, but maybe don’t wear a brand new ensemble for your session if you’ve never worn it and have no idea if you love how it feels on you. There are few things that can take the wind from the sails of E-Session excitement more quickly than having to constantly tug at the back of a too-short skirt, hiking up pants that are too saggy in the behind, or fixing a bra straps that hang out of a top. Not to mention… the corrections are time-consuming! Express yourself with your clothing, yes, but do MAKE SURE IT FITS! Ultimately, I believe the most important thing is that you choose clothing and colors that you KNOW you will feel great in, and something that you can move around in pretty well for the location we have chosen for your engagement session. (E.g. You may want to avoid spike heals if you're session is in a field at Melton Hill, or to hike down hills at Ijams Quarry)
Q: How many outfits do I bring?
A: Plan to bring at least two "looks" (Though we may have time for 3 if you just can’t choose)
Casual: Think something that you’d wear for a day-trip downtown. Something that you’re comfortable moving around in. We will be sitting down, walking, playing and it helps to be able to do this without too much ‘adjusting’ of clothing.
Dressy: This look will be for our more ‘formal’ posing, dramatic looks, etc. Don’t feel like you have to be dressed to the nines, but it is more than welcomed if this fits your personal style. Keep in mind that we will likely be moving around the location for these portraits, so it is a good idea to bring a pair of slides or slip ons for those in-bewteen moments.
DOs:
Accessorize! Fun hats, statement jewelry pieces, fun shoes, jackets, sport coats, scarves, etc. You can always take them off if you aren’t feeling it, or to change up the look without changing the outfit.
Wear a floaty, flouncy dress! Dresses like this create great movement in photos, and is flattering on everyone!
Get a manicure! You don’t have to have them done in a salon, but make sure nails and cuticles are clean and tidy - they WILL be in your photos! (Men, too!)
Wear some Makeup! Whether you plan to DIY or have your make-up done professionally, make sure you’re look stays true to your look, and don’t be afraid to go a little heavier than you would for your daily look, as the camera tends to “see through” a lighter makeup application, more than you can see in the mirror.
Consider the weather! When you are choosing your ensembles, please consult the weatherman! If it’s going to be a very warm evening, be sure to come prepared to touchup makeup and hair accordingly.
DON’TS: (Just a few…)
Don't Stress! Don's even think about how to act or pose for the camera… just be yourselves! The best photos are ones where couples are comfortable being their natural selves together, and are having fun! I will help and guide you through the session with posing prompts, suggestions and adjustments.
Don't Wear tiny patterns! If possible, try to steer clear of tiny patterns such as mini-pinstripes or itty-bitty polkadots. These patterns can cause an unpleasing camera affect called Moire, and it’s overall icky and distracting.
Ok, that’s it! Most important thing is just to arrive relaxed, ready to be silly and have fun!!
See you soon!
