How to…
make the most of your formal family portraits
When it comes to family formals on wedding day, we are often working with a relatively small block of time in an overall tightly-structured timeline. In order to keep things moving along smoothly and quickly, we typically like to start with the larger of the two families, unless otherwise specified. We order our shotlist from the largest to smallest, prioritizing photos that include family members who may have trouble standing for a length of time, and then moving down to our smallest groupings, including parents and siblings. Once you have a final headcount and guest list, it helps to compile a list of the groups of family portraits that are important to you. Having this list helps us stay organized during this time, and helps you say relaxed knowing you are not forgetting anything. As you are compiling your list, here are a few things to consider:
Adjust! Each family has unique dynamics. If parents are divorced/remarried, or there are estranged siblings, etc, prior to your wedding day, we can discuss how to make everyone comfortable during posing, and how to arrange groups to ensure that everyone feels included and valued.
Be Specific! We make no assumptions about which family photos may be important to you, so the more specific you are with the groupings the faster it will go, and the sooner you can begin your celebration! If you do want to have individual photos with each aunt, or each cousin, etc., please make a note of this.
Come Together Now! Some couples choose to have a photo with both of their families together. If you would like to do this, let us know in advance and we will arrange this photo to be captured first.
Dad Who? Please be sure to include the name of each person in your list. Ie: John (FOB), Judy (MOB), Jackie (SOB), John Jr. (BOB).
Expedite! We know how important family is, and want you to have cherished memories with them from your wedding day. We will work as efficiently as possible to make sure we can get through your family photo list within the allotted time. When you are making your groupings, please consider that large groupings on a list can take a 1-3 minutes to set up and capture-- and this is if the stars align, and no one wanders off to the bar or bathroom, etc. As an example, let's assume we are working in perfect union with universe and each photo takes exactly one minute to arrange and capture. With the prepared portrait list our Imaginary Couple has given us, they have included several iterations of the same family groupings for each of their families, both sides. You'll see pretty quickly how much time we are looking at for this portrait session.... (See example below)
Formal or Casual? We DO want to make your formal portrait dreams come true, but we also need to make sure we maximize every minute on your wedding day. If your family is on the larger side, but you do not want to set aside a lot of formal portrait time before your reception begins, consider creating a separate list of extended family groups and we can capture these for you in a more relaxed setting during the reception.
What NOT to do if we need to save time….

And this is just ONE side of Imaginary Couple's family... now let's add all the other combinations and we are looking at 90+ minutes of formal photos… many of these combinations are semi-redundant, and could easily be captured in a more casual setting at the reception, or eliminated all together.
EXAMPLE OF A MORE TIME-EFFICIENT "FLOW" FOR FAMILY FORMAL GROUPINGS:
BRIDE’S FAMILY:
Group 1: Bride & Groom, Bride’s Grand Parents (Jeffery & Jennifer)
Group 2: Bride & Groom, Bride’s Parents (Mark & Mary Beth), Siblings (Matthew, Mark Jr., Mary) Grandparents, extended family (names of any Aunts, uncles, cousins, etc.) This usually includes all spouses/partners.
Group 3: Bride & Groom, Mark, Mary Beth, Matthew, Mark Jr., Mary + spouses/partners. *If siblings are unmarried but are with a date, please let us know how to proceed with this grouping as necessary.
Group 4: Bride & Groom, Mark, Mary Beth, Matthew, Mark Jr., Mary
Group 5: Bride & Groom, Matthew, Mark Jr., Mary
Group 6: Bride & Groom, Mark, Mary Beth
Group 7: Bride, Mark, Mary Beth
Group 8: Bride, Mary Beth
Group 9: Bride, Mark
Groups 10+ ?: Any specific grouping requests after these suggestions
Now rinse and repeat for your partner's family, and we're done! You can switch up the variations on groups as needed, this is just a sample to show how we like to see the lists organized! And remember- this is just a guideline to help us stay organized. If you want to add a group last minute, or you’ve accidentally left someone off the list, we will make sure to get those photos, too!
